{"id":553,"date":"2018-05-10T22:22:15","date_gmt":"2018-05-11T02:22:15","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.ancientislands.org\/conservation\/?p=553"},"modified":"2018-05-10T22:22:15","modified_gmt":"2018-05-11T02:22:15","slug":"polks-water-future-still-unclear-sierra-told","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.ancientislands.org\/?p=553","title":{"rendered":"Polk\u2019s Water Future Still Unclear, Sierra Told"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The only thing certain about the future of water consumption in Polk County is that doing\n<\/p>\n<p> it the way we&#8217;ve done it for decades will be unsustainable, representatives of the\n<\/p>\n<p> Polk<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.ancientislands.org\/conservation\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/05\/051118_0222_PolksWaterF1.jpg\" alt=\"\"\/>\n\t<\/p>\n<p> Regional Water Cooperative told Ancient Islands Sierra Thursday.\n<\/p>\n<p>That means spending millions of dollars to study whether it&#8217;s really practical to pump\n<\/p>\n<p> and treat brackish water from the lower reaches of the Floridan aquifer or whether\n<\/p>\n<p> collecting stormwater at key points along the Peace Creek Canal would provide enough aquifer recharge to justify pumping additional water from the freshwater section of the aquifer.\n<\/p>\n<p>County Commissioner George  Lindsey III, the cooperative&#8217;s current chairman, gave a presentation along with Assistant County Manager Ryan Taylor and    consultant Mary Thomas.\n<\/p>\n<p>The major points of Thursday&#8217;s presentation were:\n<\/p>\n<p>&#8211;The regional approach to water planning by local governments improves chances of getting adequate financial help to implement expensive projects.\n<\/p>\n<p>&#8211;A major challenge is to hold the coalition board made up of elected officials together long term when elections change the makeup of some local governing bodies.\n<\/p>\n<p>&#8211;Developers have been slow to adopt water-conservation programs, despite offers of subsidies to implement better practices in new subdivision.\n<\/p>\n<p>&#8211;The price customers should expect to pay triple what they pay now for potable water.\n<\/p>\n<p>&#8211;Conservation remains  a priority because it costs the less to implement.\n<\/p>\n<p>&#8211;It&#8217;s still unknown how practical some of the proposals are in either delivering adequate supplies and in being able to be implemented affordably.\n<\/p>\n<p>Any final proposal will get an outside professional review.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\n\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\n\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\n\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\n\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\n\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\n\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\n\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\n\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\n\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\n\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\n\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\n\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\n\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\n\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\n\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\n\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\n\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\n\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\n\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\n\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\n\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\n\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\n\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\n\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\n\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\n\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\n\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\n\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>ts<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The only thing certain about the future of water consumption in Polk County is that doing it the way we&#8217;ve done it for decades will be unsustainable, representatives of the Polk Regional Water Cooperative told Ancient Islands Sierra Thursday.
