{"id":514,"date":"2018-03-09T20:48:20","date_gmt":"2018-03-10T01:48:20","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.ancientislands.org\/conservation\/?p=514"},"modified":"2018-03-09T20:48:20","modified_gmt":"2018-03-10T01:48:20","slug":"polk-whooping-cranes-may-be-moved-to-louisiana","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.ancientislands.org\/?p=514","title":{"rendered":"Polk Whooping Cranes May Be Moved To Louisiana"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>\n\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.ancientislands.org\/conservation\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/03\/031018_0148_PolkWhoopin1.jpg\" alt=\"\"\/><strong><br \/>\n\t\t<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size:14pt\"><strong>Whooping Crane in a pasture in Lake Wales<br \/>\n<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p>The remaining Whooping Cranes that survived an unsuccessful attempt to establish a non-migratory flock of these endangered birds may be moved from Polk and surrounding counties to Louisiana, according to a draft proposal issued this week by the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fws.gov\/southeast\/pdf\/environmental-assessment\/a-proposal-to-translocate-whooping-cranes-from-a-discontinued-non-essential-experimental-population-in-central-florida-to-an-ongoing-nep-in-southwestern-louisiana.pdf\">U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service.<\/a>\n\t<\/p>\n<p>The cranes, which have attracted birdwatchers to various locations around Lake Wales,  are proposed to be relocated because they are in danger of dying out without reproducing.\n<\/p>\n<p>Federal and state biologists were involved in the release of 289 birds between 1993 and 2005 in an attempt to create a non-migratory flock.
