{"id":428,"date":"2017-11-29T09:09:58","date_gmt":"2017-11-29T14:09:58","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.ancientislands.org\/conservation\/?p=428"},"modified":"2017-11-29T09:09:58","modified_gmt":"2017-11-29T14:09:58","slug":"fwc-may-ban-feeding-monkeys","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.ancientislands.org\/?p=428","title":{"rendered":"FWC May Ban Feeding Monkeys"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission is scheduled to consider <a href=\"http:\/\/myfwc.com\/media\/4327237\/C1-SM-Feeding.pdf\">a proposal<\/a> next month to make feeding members of Florida&#8217;s feral monkey populations a violation of Florida&#8217;s wildlife regulations.\n<\/p>\n<p>It seems these feral primates are no longer just a curiosity for state park tourists around  Silver Springs, but have been showing up in some communities in that part of Florida in recent years.\n<\/p>\n<p>The rule is being sought because FWC officials are concerned about the potential for the spread of disease to humans if they have more contact with these animals.\n<\/p>\n<p>The ultimate solution is to remove the animals from the wild, but that has <a href=\"http:\/\/www.tampabay.com\/news\/environment\/wildlife\/capture-of-monkeys-in-silver-springs-sparks-debate\/1215144\">been controversial<\/a>, pitting environmental advocates against animal rights advocates.\n<\/p>\n<p>There has been a licensed trapping program, which has also drawn criticism from the same groups.\n<\/p>\n<p>FWC&#8217;s meeting will occur Dec. 5-7 in Gainesville.
