{"id":387,"date":"2017-10-16T12:50:19","date_gmt":"2017-10-16T16:50:19","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.ancientislands.org\/conservation\/?p=387"},"modified":"2017-10-16T12:50:19","modified_gmt":"2017-10-16T16:50:19","slug":"polk-water-co-op-to-borrow-23m-for-deep-well-studies","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.ancientislands.org\/?p=387","title":{"rendered":"Polk Water Co-op To Borrow $23M For Deep Well Studies"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The <a href=\"http:\/\/www.prwcwater.org\/\">Polk Regional Water Cooperative<\/a> will consider borrowing $23 million when it meets Wednesday at 2 p.m. at the Lake Myrtle Complex in Auburndale.\n<\/p>\n<p>The money will go for a variety of projects that will occur over the next four years to investigate plans to tap the Lower Floridan Aquifer as a possible alternative water supply now that water managers have admitted that we have finally reached the Upper Floridan Aquifer&#8217;s  sustainable yield.\n<\/p>\n<p>The cooperative is also scheduled to hire a consultant to implement the work. The top-ranked company is an entity known as Team 1.  One of the principals is Robert Beltran, a Lakeland consultant and former executive director of the SWFWMD, according to the <a href=\"http:\/\/yoursun.com\/sunnews\/winterhavensun\/13284870-699\/story.html.csp\">Winter Haven Sun.<\/a>\n\t<\/p>\n<p>Well sites are in southeast Polk and at the edge of the Green Swamp.\n<\/p>\n<p>Some of the questions the research will address will include:\n<\/p>\n<p>&#8211;What kind of water quality and how much treatment will be required to make it potable?\n<\/p>\n<p>&#8211;How productive will be wells be to supply water needs?\n<\/p>\n<p>&#8211;What is the best design for deep injection wells to get rid of the treatment waste?\n<\/p>\n<p>&#8211;What is the best design  for pipelines to route water from these  remote well sites to public utility distribution systems?\n<\/p>\n<p>&#8211;How will the project  affect water rates?\n<\/p>\n<p>The consultant will also hold a series of public meetings during the course of research.\n<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.ancientislands.org\/conservation\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/10\/101617_1650_PolkWaterCo1.jpg\" alt=\"\"\/>\n\t<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, the Southwest Florida Water Management District has been drilling <a href=\"https:\/\/www.swfwmd.state.fl.us\/projects\/lower-floridan-aquifer\/\">other exploratory wells<\/a> in eastern Polk to gather more data on this portion of the aquifer.\n<\/p>\n<p>In addition to the two well studies, work will also examine whether storing more water along the Peace Creek Canal  can be used to justify increased water-use permits from Winter Haven  for future growth based on claims of increased aquifer recharge.\n<\/p>\n<p>This is the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.sustainablewinterhaven.net\/\">&#8220;Sapphire Necklace&#8221;<\/a> project that was originally hyped    as an environmental restoration project.   <\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The Polk Regional Water Cooperative will consider borrowing $23 million when it meets Wednesday at 2 p.m. at the Lake Myrtle Complex in Auburndale.
